Enriched Grains Play Role in National Birth Defects Prevention Month

January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month and the week of Jan. 8-14 is Folic Acid Awareness Week. These milestones provide the industry with a terrific opportunity to reinforce the health benefits of enriched grains in birth defects prevention. Folic acid consumption is critical for the prevention of neural tube birth defects which affect the brain and spinal cord. Enriched grains, such as white bread, tortillas, cereal and pasta, are the number one source of folic acid in the diets of most Americans.
