Last week the Senate voted to “table” an amendment by Senators Shaheen (D-NH) and Kirk (R-IL) reforming the current U.S. sugar program. The Senate voted in favor of tabling the amendment by a 50-46 margin, meaning the amendment will be held indefinitely. ABA was against tabling this amendment. While a setback, Congressional sugar reformers were emboldened by the close vote and will continue fight to reform this egregious program. ABA will continue be the baking industry’s leading advocate on this issue.
