WASHINGTON, D.C. ─ “ABA is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Joe Schwebel, President of Schwebel Baking Company, Youngstown, Ohio. The entire baking industry has lost a great leader and friend,” said American Bakers Association President & CEO Robb MacKie. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Barbara, Paul, Alyson, Lee and the rest of the Schwebel family.”
“Joe was a tremendous leader of his company and the industry. He also was very devoted to his family. Joe Schwebel embodied the consummate thoughtful, humble and effective leader. Joe spoke up when he felt he had something important to add to the conversation. When he spoke, people paid close attention because he was giving invaluable insight. Joe will be sorely missed on so many levels, but especially for his gentle kindness,” continued MacKie.
Joe Schwebel served with distinction on the ABA Board of Directors for 16 years from 1994 to 2010. One of his many achievements on the ABA Board was leading the formation of the Grain Foods Foundation, an education foundation dedicated to promoting the health benefits of grain based foods. Joe Schwebel also was active in a number of ABA Committees including the Human Resources Committee.
“Joe was not only held in the highest professional respect, he was a great friend to so many people,” said MacKie. “Everyone who met and knew Joe felt blessed for the opportunity.”
