In response to continuous and aggressive efforts by ABA to educate policy and lawmakers on the many hurdles of implementation, USDA's Food and Nutrition Service recently issued updated guidance recognizing the industry's challenges related to the new grain requirements for the school meals program. With this new guidance, the agency has established greater flexibility for grains in the school meals program waiving daily maximums that were making it difficult to plan grains for both breakfast and lunch.
This is a victory for the baking industry and a step in the right direction as changes to grain requirements for the school meals program has the potential to cost the baking industry millions in reformulating, product development, and pacakging costs. ABA will continue to address implementation issues regarding the school meal program grain requirements.
