ABA and ATBI Boards enjoyed a networking reception on Capitol Hill where they got a political perspective from Congressman Fleming (R-LA). Rep. Fleming covered pressing topics such as the implementation of the new health care laws or "Obamacare," the economy, the current status of the farm bill and sugar reform, and immigration. He added that the government can't keep spending like it is or we're going to be in "serious trouble," and Obamacare was the biggest threat to American businesses.
He said that another threat to business and the economy is regulation; he said that Congress needs to control the "rule writers." Currently they have no feedback, they are under their own control and this is a problem that needs to be fixed. He said that Congress can take control by exerting "power of the purse," referring to the funds that go to the government agencies. "Government agencies are turning into the fourth branch of government." "They don't have to live with the results from their decisions."
He also gave his opinion on what it will take for the GOP to be successful in the next election. He said to succeed as a party, "we need more minorities in leadership to reflect our own constituency."
