Last week, ABA’s Food Technical Regulatory Affairs Committee (FTRAC) had record attendance of 50 company representatives that tackled key issues for bakers including the development of ABA’s preventive control comments for food; effective strategies for environmental monitoring and themes for the 2015 Dietary Guidelines recommendation review.
During the two-day meeting, the group heard presentations from Dr. Sonny Ramaswamy, Director of the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), regarding its research efforts and potential partnership opportunities. Additionally, Scott Montgomery, Director of the Flour Fortification Initiative, shared his organization’s global efforts (FFI) on folic acid, iron and other key nutrients. The group also had a roundtable dialogue on the Z50.2 standard with Jennifer Frankenberg, Sage Food Safety Consultants, regarding educational opportunities and ways to gather additional input from bakers as part of their ongoing efforts.
The Committee’s next meeting will be Wednesday, October 23, in Washington, DC.
