Rich Scalise, President, CEO and Co-Founder of Hearthside Food Solutions, LLC, and current Chairman of the American Bakers Association, will discuss with attendees what baking industry issues keep him up at night, as well as share other thoughts and concerns CEO’s have regarding the industry.
Rich is a 37-year veteran of the food industry, including roles President of Ralcorp Frozen Bakery Products Division and President / COO of ConAgra Foods Refrigerated Foods Division. In these and other industry leadership roles he shaped a management philosophy that led to the formation of Hearthside Food Solutions, LLC in 2009.
Rich saw that Contract manufacturing was ripe for reinvention. As a customer of contract manufacturers, he saw the shortcomings and believed he could solve them.
To address these needs, Rich, along with the private equity firm Wind Point Partners, formed Hearthside in 2009. The company focuses on core categories and on serving premier brands. Rich believes that by melding the speed and flexibility of a lean start-up with structure, resources and capabilities of a major provider, he could deliver both low price and outstanding, consistent quality. An example is the investment in SAP to provide customers with greater visibility and control.
So far the results speak for themselves. Hearthside is now the food industry’s largest integrated contract manufacturer and the nation’s largest privately owned bakery. At 4 years the company has 20 manufacturing facilities across seven states and revenues over $1 billion in sales. More importantly, Hearthside has forever raised customer’s expectations for contract manufacturing excellence.
