The American Bakers Association (ABA) praises the congressional leaders for their introduction of the Sugar Policy Modernization Act of 2017.
“Bakers commend the steadfast leadership of Reps. Virginia Foxx (NC-05) and Danny Davis (IL-07), Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (NH) and Pat Toomey (PA) and the more than 50 original cosponsors, who continue to fight to ensure tax-paying American consumers stop flipping the bill for artificially inflated U.S. sugar prices,” said ABA President & CEO Robb MacKie.
Sugar is the most tightly restricted agricultural commodity in the United States and was the only commodity not reformed by the 2014 Farm Bill.
“Today’s introduction is the important first step towards reforming this depression-era U.S. commodity program, which has cost consumers more than $15 billion since 2008, and is responsible for a loss of over 125,000 jobs in sugar-using industries,” said ABA Director of Government Relations Mike Goscinski.
